When I work with patients in the area of substance abuse - whether it be opiates, alcohol, crack, whatever substance they are abusing - it is always about the FEELINGS associated with the addiction. Always. It is simple for me to know that, but so very difficult for them to understand it. It is even more of a challenge for the family of the addicted person. I don't answer all the WHY questions... those you will discover as you go through treatment. If we kept talking as to why you abuse drugs or alcohol, we would be talking and you would be using for another 5 years. But as treatment progresses, you will understand yourself better, and get in touch with those feelings. But know this, and I have been in the field for over 30 years, I have never met a person where the drug abuse was not about the feelings. NEVER
I think it will comfort the reader or the family to know this. Do not blame the addict. I know it is a challenge. I know the difficultly for the wives and the husbands, as well as the children. All the roles become reversed. Suddenly, a 14-year-old girl is watching over her drunken Mom. How sad. But it can be changed. And lives do change. I know the pain of addiction, for I grew up in it, and then, I married into it. I surrounded myself with it, and I honestly thought, there is no way out. When I realized many years ago that I could not make the other person sober, that is when I realized - I had to make a life of my own, with or without them. And I did.
Educate yourself about addiction, as family members, as you become more clear, so will the addict. It can only make YOU feel better.
